Module Overview

In a nutshell, WarmWorld wants to make the ICON model Better, Faster, Easier and Smarter: – Better at explicitly simulating small scale processes – Faster in running the high-resolution configuration, regardless of the computational architecture – Easier for users to interact with the model during and after the runs – Smarter in capitalizing on the latest developments in maths, informatics and AI.

These goals are given each a separate WarmWorld module:

Better

As state-of-the-art climate models push toward higher resolutions, more and more fine grained physical processes find explicit representation within models. Better focuses on ICON’s integration of climate physics, optimizing existing processes and incorporating new ones, while improving the simulation quality of the interaction within the Earth system.

Faster

Work conducted within Faster restructures ICON’s current model architecture to achieve a more agile and scalable code base. Not only does this allow to harvest the optimum potential from advances in the computing sector, is also allows to build a modular code structure enabling flexible development.

Easier

A new generation of high-resolution climate models comes with its unique and uncharted set of challenges for developers, data managers and users. Following this paradigm shift, Easier reevaluates foregone standard practice, while aiming to make granular climate information widely and easily available to users.

Smarter

Through projects aimed at improvements in data compression, simulation acceleration, and in-situ analysis, Smarter builds stronger connections between the climate science and the maths and informatics community, thus contributing to an ICON model comfortably benefiting from the most recent technological advancements.
