Summer School 2024
From 27 August to 2 September 2024, the first ESiWACE3‑WarmWorld Summer School on HPC for Climate and Weather Applications took place just outside Helsinki, Finland. It was organized jointly by the EuroHPC JU Centre of Excellence ESiWACE3 and the German BMBF project WarmWorld.
The school brought together young researchers and software engineers — including advanced master’s and early‑stage PhD students in applied mathematics, informatics, and natural sciences — to engage in lectures and hands‑on sessions focused on climate and weather modelling using modern HPC systems.
The curriculum covered essential topics including weather/climate modelling, Earth system model (ESM) data management and visualization, as well as parallel computing techniques such as MPI, OpenMP, hybrid and GPU programming. Lecturers included experts from CSC, DKRZ, FZ Jülich, and University of Helsinki.
Summer School 2025
The second WarmWorld-ESiWACE3 Summer School, hpc4climate 2025, takes place from 28 July to 7 August 2025 in Lauenburg, Germany.
Throughout the school, participants will:
- Gain practical experience working with the ICON climate model
- Learn key HPC and software engineering skills for Earth system science
- Explore cutting-edge methods in data analysis, parallelization, and scientific computing
- Engage in coding labs, tutorials, and team challenges designed around real-world research problems
Coding challenges will cover topics ranging from heterogeneous computing environments (including GPU/CPU architectures) to open-source software workflows, and from numerical modeling to visualizing simulation outputs.
